Being Tolerant in an Intolerant World
Most would agree that people in today’s society are all about tolerance. It is practically jammed down your throat every time you turn around. Why is it then that they are completely intolerant of everyone who believes differently than they do!? They preach that everyone has the right to be whoever they want to be, except when you don’t agree with what they are preaching then all of a sudden you are a bigot and a fool. They will cut you down and shame you any way that they can. Where did the tolerance go? Maybe it just applies to you accepting their beliefs and not vice versa. Either way, we are going about it all wrong.
John 15:12 NIV: “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.”
See the thing is…God calls us to love everyone. No matter what we choose to do in life we are supposed to love one another. However, I think where the lines get crossed is that people think that we have to accept everything that everyone else does. This is simply not true. You have your own set of standards and morals in life. If the things that people are doing around you do not coincide with those morals then you can disagree with them. We, as Christians, actually should disagree with them. The disagreement becomes an opportunity to spread God’s word through our love.
2 Timothy 3:16 NIV: “All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness”
I am not saying that you should go out and try to bash people into believing what you do because that is not the way to go about it. Rather, be kind to everyone even if you disagree with them. Share your love. Do nice things for them. Show them God’s grace through your life and your actions. If we are cruel to people who believe differently, we are no better and are doing a huge disservice to all Christians. Hopefully living by example and supporting them will help some of them find God for themselves.
Matthew 7:25 NIV: “The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock”
This is one of my all-time favorite verses because it is so applicable to our society today. Storms will come your way. People will try to knock you down, say horrible things about you and constantly harass you for believing what you believe. The fact of the matter is this: Keep your faith strong and equip yourself with the word of the Lord. Build your relationship with God on a rock. He calls us to stand strong even in the worst of times. I believe that we are in the middle of a very hard time, a storm if you will. The greed, indecency, lack of love and courtesy, sexual immorality, lack of faith and so much more. Be a crusader and stand tall for what you believe in. Just do it with love and kindness. How amazing would it be if you led one person to the Lord because of the impact you have on their life!?! Incredible!
